Members,

September 25, 2010 was our final board meeting of the year and this was a very successful meeting.  However, there is one point that was discussed and we feel that we, as the board, did not do a good job of clearing the air.

Our current funds stand in excess of $110,000.  We recently sent a letter out to our members asking for people to rejoin or send a donation, if possible.  Sid Ingram, owner of Beavers Bend Fly Shop and foundation advisor, asked why we did that if we have so much money.  He also stated that the letter seemed to imply that we were short of funds at this time.

After some discussion we feel that we are leaving key information out of the financial report given at the meetings.  That information being what we’ll term as “Committed Funds”.  Money that we have promised or set aside but not actually spent yet.

In this category we have $60K for the re-reg project, $25K for the bubble diffuser compressor, $12K for this year’s repairs to Spillway and extra trout.  And we are sure that we are leaving something out.  If you subtract that money out, this clearly shows that we are not as well off as it appears.  And we have larger future plans in the works that will require even more funds.  Spillway cold water extension, New Handicap Access on the river, etc.

Also to point out is that a large majority of our funds come from just a few different entities.  We would like to see our membership more active financially and through participationbefore we lose these other sources of funding.

We hope that this clears things up. Thank you to all of you for current and ongoing support.

Also don’t forget that this is the meeting where new Board members will be elected. Plus catered food and lots of friendly folks trying to make the LMF river one of the country’s best trout rivers!!Make plans to join us and get in on some of the great fall fishing that will be going on then.

On Friday, August 27th, members of the LMFRF presented a check for $5200.00 to Beavers Bend State Park to help pay for the new repeater tower and radio equipment.  This money, along with the $6500.00 from the Friends of Beavers Bend will pay for the new radio and tower that will allow all emergency response personnel to communicate on one channel anywhere within a 30 mile radius of the Park Offices.  This is a good step forward in increasing the safety of the Park Rangers, the Game Wardens, and the general public.

Check under Area Information and there is now a place for fishing and conditions reports. These will be posted periodically and hopefully help enhance your enjoyment of your time on the river!!! Thanks for looking!!

We are lucky to have some very talented and generous members in our organization. One in particular is Lewis Barringer who I met several years ago as he showed me around the river. I had a great time and really enjoyed our time together on the LMF. Lewis now builds some beautiful bamboo fly rods by hand right here in the southwest.

Tickets are available at Three Rivers Fly Shop, the tickets are $10 each. These rods are normally $1100 retail, but you might win this rod with just a $10 investment! Or buy 20 or 30 tickets and you are still getting a screaming deal on a handmade bamboo fly rod!!

Lewis has hand built a bamboo fly rod and given it to the LMFRF to raffle off to help us keep working hard on making the LMF a world class trout stream. In Lewis’ own words:

My name is Lewis Barringer.  I’ve been fly fishing most of my 50 years.  I grew up in California where Rainbows and Browns were common and during the summer I would backpack to the high country for Golden Trout.  My father built rods but passed away when I was young, so I learned to build rods on my own with the help of many websites.  Having only been building for the last 2 years, I feel I’ve made good headway and I build a good rod.  I build all my rods by hand and I don’t see any reason to ever change.  It seems that hand crafting is becoming a lost art.  Some things should never fade away.

I fish the Lower Mountain Fork often because it’s close to home and the fishing is great.  The Foundation has done a lot for the fishery and I’m proud to be a part of it and always look forward to new projects.  There are so many things that we, as a group, can do to improve the river and I know that in time we’ll get many, many things done.  Enjoy this rod.  It’s made to be fished, as are all my rods.

From Pat Waters:

New Radio Repeater Tower For Park

A long time problem in Beavers Bend Park has been the ability of the Park Rangers and other emergency personnel to communicate with each other by radio.  Some areas had no signal at all and in other areas the radio was being used by maintenance and cleaning as well as law enforcement.  This was not only a problem; it was a danger to the Rangers as well as the public.

Thanks to The Friends of Beavers Bend and the Lower Mountain Fork River Foundation, a new radio tower with a repeater will be erected near the Park Offices.  This new tower will have a transmission radius of thirty miles and will be accessible from all areas of the Park.  The complete cost of this project to get up and running is $11, 660.66.

The new radio channel will be for law enforcement and emergency personnel only.  This means that the Rangers and Game Wardens will have radio contact with each other when out of their trucks and increase their safety when on duty.  Additional emergency personnel can be called in for water rescue, fire control, or criminal apprehension.

This new tower will go a long way in improving everyone’s safety in Beavers Bend State Park from above the lake all the way down to Presbyterian Falls.
